Niranjan Thomas Alva, veteran lawyer, passes away at 78

Supreme Court lawyer, Niranjan Thomas Alva passed away at M S Ramaiah Memorial Hospital, Bengaluru owing to a short-term illness.

He was born to the freedom fighters, Joachim and Violet Alva, who were the first couple in the Indian parliament. He had been a board member of the State Bank of India for more than ten years.

As president of AICUF(All India Catholic University Federation), he has played a pivotal role in expanding the horizons of AICUF in the nation during the late 1950's.

He always had the spirit of a true AICUFer, etching in heart the ethos of AICUF, that is, “we are born into an unjust society but we are determined not to leave it as we found it.”

At a time when women cabin crew of Air India weren't allowed to give birth, his litigation paved way for the benefit of equal rights for female crew as their male counterparts thereupon gaining them access to full retirement benefits and the right to bear children.

He was survived by his wife Margaret Alva(Congress leader) and children Niret, Nikhil, Manira and Nivedith.
